Math and Language Arts Reteach Classes
Many of you may have children who will have the opportunity to participate in a math or language arts reteach class this quarter or in any of the upcoming quarters. Your child may be placed in the class for the entire quarter instead of their enrichment class, share time in an enrichment and the reteach class, or be pulled into reteach class from time to time during the quarter.
What is the purpose of the reteach class? The math and the language arts reteach classes were designed to help students that are struggling in math or language arts skills. These skills may be areas that have been identified by in-class assessments or during daily instruction.
How are these classes arranged? The reteach classes are smaller classes of 10-15 students each. They are designed this way so that each student is able to obtain more individualized assistance in his or her area of need. It also allows teachers the ability to have students in the classes to work on skills at their own level and do small group work together.
How does 6th grade reteach and enrich work? The sixth grade reteach and enrich classes are arranged on a week-to-week basis. Students take assessments at the end of each week in math and language arts to check for mastery of a concept. If the student is struggling with the concept, he or she is placed into either math or language arts reteach, depending upon the content. If the student has mastered the concept, he or she is placed into math or language arts enrich class, where the student will be exposed to the skill once again, at a higher level, to “enrich” his or her understanding and application of the skill.
For sixth grade, grades are given only for band and choir. Band and choir grades are included in the student’s G.P.A. Reteach and enrich grades are included in the student’s regular language arts or math grade.
How do 7th and 8th grade reteach and enrich work? Seventh and eighth grade reteach and enrich classes work a little differently than sixth grade. Reteach classes contain students that need help with basic skills in math and language arts as well as students that are pulled in week-by-week from enrich that struggle with the content being covered in class. The enrich classes are more like elective classes that students are assigned from quarter to quarter, allowing them to explore some other academic and interesting course offerings.
In seventh and eighth grade, grades are given for reteach and enrich classes. The grade is given in the class (reteach or enrich) in which the student spent the majority of the quarter. The reteach and enrich grades are not included in the students’ G.P.A. The exception is if the student is enrolled in band or choir. These grades are included in the G.P.A.
How does the teacher determine if my child has mastered the material that is being learned in the reteach class? Teachers give the students an assessment at the end of the unit in order to determine their level of mastery on the concepts being learned.
Overall, reteach classes give your child the opportunity to build their skills in the content area with a little extra time each day, in a small group environment, helping your child to reach his or her very best! |
